You are considered a low-mileage driver if you drive 40 miles or less per day. People who are retired, work from home and take public transportation are often low mileage drivers. If you are a low-mileage driver, then you don't have to change your oil as often as someone who drives a lot. However, your car will still require basic maintenance.

Keep in mind that your oil only needs to be changed when it is dirty. You can check the oil dipstick every month. The oil should be a golden or light color. If the color has changed, then you may need an oil change.

In the past, people were told that they needed to change the oil every 3,000 miles. However, you may only need to change your oil once every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. Some vehicles can go 15,000 miles without an oil change.
