If you live in a place where the temperature gets down to freezing for weeks at a time, or if you tend to get a lot of snow each winter, then you should consider getting a set of winter tires.

Winter tires use a different formula of rubber, so they get better grip than other tires when it is cold out. They have deeper treads and little cuts that combine to keep slush out of the treads but retain packed snow, which boosts friction in snowy or icy conditions. But winter tires wear out fast, so if you do use them, make sure you remember to switch to all-season tires in the spring. They're better suited to warm, clear roads and you can get more value out of the winter tires that way.
