What is front-wheel drive vs. rear-wheel drive?

Have you ever wondered why compact cars are so efficient? For one, they’re much smaller than an SUV, but it’s also about the way their drivetrain is configured. Small sedans, compact cars, and crossovers typically have a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration. With an FWD, your vehicle is pulled forward by the front wheels. However, it’s the opposite with a rear-wheel drive configuration.

In an RWD vehicle, the car is pushed forward, resulting in quick acceleration. This is why so many sports cars have RWD and can get up to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. However, power comes with a price. You won’t get the best gas mileage, and if you are constantly towing with your vehicle, you may strain your transmission faster than with a smaller sedan.
