The Different Tests of the IIHS Crash Test

If you are wondering how the IIHS gets its ratings for the vehicle, you could find out by looking at the tests. The IIHS puts the vehicle through five different tests which are designed to let them know what to expect from the tested vehicle when it comes to safety.

The five tests of the vehicle for the IIHS ratings are the small-overlap front test, moderate-overlap front test, a side test, roof strength test, and the head restraints and seat test. There are some recent additions to what is being tested at IIHS. They are testing front-crash-prevention safety equipment in order to see how well they work.

Vehicles that go on the IIHS tests have the possibility of winning one of two awards. Top-performing cars are going to get a Top Safety Pick award for their quality. Vehicles that do even better are going to get the Top Safety Pick+ award.
